ACE awareness: presiding with kindness

Scottish Criminal defence laywer, Iain Smith, believes the simple act of kindness, and treating offenders with dignity and respect is key in shaping change within the justice system.  Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE’s) give social context to offenders, and a justice system that understands these traumas will secure better outcomes not only for offenders but for society as a whole. His compassion for his clients is evident in this moving article written by Iain  himself.  Humanising offenders really is Smart Justice.

Check out his full bio on the invited speakers page, and while you’re there, read about a few of the other fantastic speakers we have lined up for you.

Iain is presenting Cutting crime with compassion: a curious defence lawyer’s story.  Catch him at the Lunchtime Session (L5) on Tuesday at 1pm.  Also, check out the rest of the program and don’t forget to register whilst you’re at it!
